President Donald Trump ordered the release of all government records related to Amelia Earhart’s final flight, adding the famed aviator to his ongoing declassification campaign.
Trump announced the move Friday on Truth Social, calling Earhart “an Aviation Pioneer” whose 1937 disappearance “has captivated millions.” The order follows earlier releases of files tied to the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr.
Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, vanished while attempting a round-the-world trip. Her disappearance has fueled decades of speculation, with theories ranging from a crash at sea to capture by foreign forces.
Beyond her transatlantic flight, Earhart set multiple records: first woman to fly solo nonstop across the U.S., the first to pilot an autogiro, and the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to the mainland.
The Purdue Research Foundation and the Archaeological Legacy Institute are planning an expedition in November from Majuro, Marshall Islands, to search for her aircraft in the South Pacific.
