The Trump administration has ordered immigration agents to halt enforcement actions at farms, hotels, and restaurants following pushback over the economic fallout of aggressive deportations. The directive, confirmed by officials to both The New York Times and Associated Press, comes after President Trump expressed concern over removing “very good, long time workers.”
Since May, ICE had ramped up operations to meet White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller’s goal of 3,000 arrests per day, up from 650 earlier in Trump’s term. The increased raids hit industries reliant on undocumented labor, prompting complaints from farm bureaus and food producers.
Trump wrote Thursday on Truth Social that the crackdown was unintentionally harming agriculture and hospitality: “We must protect our Farmers, but get the CRIMINALS OUT OF THE USA. Changes are coming!”
ICE operations in places like Ventura County, California and Omaha, Nebraska led to dozens of arrests and labor disruptions. Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said enforcement will now prioritize “the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens.”
