President Trump announced Sunday he’s directing federal agencies to rebuild and reopen Alcatraz, the infamous island prison, as a facility for America’s “most ruthless and violent offenders.”

“For too long, America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat Criminal Offenders,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He said the revamped Alcatraz would serve as a symbol of “Law, Order, and JUSTICE” and emphasized it would house both violent criminals and undocumented immigrants.

Originally shut down in 1963 due to high operating costs, Alcatraz is now a tourist site drawing over 1 million visitors annually. The Bureau of Prisons confirmed it would comply with presidential orders but gave no further details on cost or timing.

Trump’s decision follows a series of legal standoffs over immigration and deportation and reflects his administration’s broader hardline criminal justice stance. Asked why Alcatraz was chosen, Trump responded, “It’s a symbol of law and order.”
