A London judge has directed former U.S. President Donald Trump to pay 300,000 pounds ($382,000) in legal fees to Orbis Business Intelligence, a firm founded by ex-British spy Christopher Steele, after Trump’s lawsuit was dismissed. The suit, which Trump initiated, claimed the Steele dossier, compiled by Orbis and containing unverified allegations against him, caused “personal and reputational damage.” However, the judge ruled the case “bound to fail” and significantly reduced the requested legal fees from 634,000 pounds ($809,000) to 300,000 pounds, citing the brief duration of the hearing.

This legal setback for Trump occurs amidst his entanglement in several U.S. legal challenges, including four criminal cases and a civil complaint, alongside a recent jury verdict finding him liable for sexual abuse and a fraud verdict against his businesses. The Steele dossier, funded by Democrats during the 2016 presidential campaign, included salacious claims about Trump’s activities in Russia, which have largely been debunked. Orbis argued that the lawsuit was invalid as the report was not intended for public release and was published by BuzzFeed without their consent, and that Trump’s claim was filed too late.
