President-elect Donald Trump announced he will nominate former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee as ambassador to Israel. Trump praised Huckabee’s “commitment to Israel,” stating Huckabee will focus on fostering peace in the Middle East. Huckabee, who served as Arkansas governor from 1996 to 2007 and ran for president twice, has been vocal on Middle East issues, opposing a ceasefire with Hamas and advocating for the group’s “complete surrender.”

The nomination, which requires Senate confirmation, comes amid Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas and increased tensions with Hezbollah. Huckabee, who lacks diplomatic experience, declined a similar role in Trump’s first term, while his daughter Sarah Huckabee Sanders served as Trump’s press secretary. Trump’s first ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, was involved in the Abraham Accords aimed at normalizing Arab-Israeli relations.
