President-elect Donald Trump has announced Linda McMahon as his nominee for secretary of the Education Department. McMahon, who co-leads Trump’s transition team, previously served as head of the Small Business Administration during his first term.
“As Secretary of Education, Linda will fight tirelessly to expand ‘Choice’ to every State in America, and empower parents to make the best Education decisions for their families,” Trump said in a statement.
McMahon faces the challenge of implementing Trump’s ambitious plans for the department, which include potential abolition and redefining Title IX after the Biden administration’s amendments to include protections for sexual orientation and gender identity. Those changes have drawn legal challenges from Republican-led states.
McMahon, a co-founder of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), left the organization in 2009 to pursue a Senate bid. She was recently named in a lawsuit alleging WWE leadership allowed years of sexual abuse by a ringside announcer.
