National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and his deputy Alex Wong will depart the Trump administration Thursday, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. The White House has not issued an official comment.
Waltz, a former congressman from Florida, had faced criticism in March after accidentally adding The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg to a Signal chat involving top officials. The chat revealed sensitive discussions about U.S. plans to strike Houthi targets in Yemen. Although Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and other senior officials denied classified details were shared, Goldberg later published specifics, prompting internal White House debate about Waltz’s future.
Despite the controversy, Trump initially stood by Waltz, calling him “a good man” who had “learned a lesson.”
Wong, who previously held key roles in the State Department and helped negotiate Trump’s summit with Kim Jong Un, also departs amid broader changes in the national security team.
Their exits mark a significant shift in leadership during Trump’s second term as global security tensions remain high.
