Former President Trump is giving moderate GOP lawmakers some breathing room on the explosive issue of abortion, treading unusually carefully on a topic Democrats are trying to make a political liability for swing-district Republicans.
During a closed-door meeting with House GOP lawmakers, Trump urged Republicans to talk about abortion in a way that suits their districts, emphasizing it as a state’s-rights matter and endorsing exceptions for certain circumstances. This message aligns with Trump’s earlier comments, advocating that abortion laws be decided by individual states and supporting exceptions in cases of rape, incest, and when the mother’s life is in danger.
This approach provides political cover for Republicans in Biden-won districts, allowing them to campaign on the issue according to their constituents’ views. “It’s very helpful,” a Biden-district Republican told The Hill of Trump’s message on abortion. Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) echoed this sentiment, calling Trump’s message “smart advice.”
Trump’s moderated stance on abortion, marking a shift from his previous positions, aims to minimize political risk while still advocating for the GOP’s core anti-abortion principles.
