President Donald Trump met Wednesday with Syrian interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa in Riyadh, marking the first direct talks between U.S. and Syrian heads of state in 25 years. Trump also announced plans to lift long-standing U.S. sanctions on Syria, calling it a “chance for greatness.”

The closed-door meeting, held alongside Gulf leaders and joined virtually by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, follows al-Sharaa’s rise to power after the fall of the Assad regime earlier this year. Al-Sharaa, a former al-Qaida affiliate and insurgent leader, has faced deep skepticism from Israel, which warned against U.S. recognition of his government.

Trump urged al-Sharaa to expel foreign militants, recognize Israel, and take control of ISIS detainee camps now overseen by Kurdish-led forces. The move signals a potential U.S. military withdrawal from Syria.

The decision drew cheers across Damascus, where Syrians celebrated hopes of rejoining the global economy after years of war and isolation.
