New York, New York — A federal judge ordered nearly $5.8 million released to writer E. Jean Carroll on Wednesday, rejecting President Donald Trump’s effort to keep the money frozen during another Supreme Court request.
U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan directed the court clerk to release the original $5 million jury award plus post-judgment interest to Carroll’s attorneys. The money had been held in the court registry while Trump appealed the 2023 civil verdict.
A New York jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming Carroll and awarded her $5 million. Trump has denied wrongdoing and continued appealing the case. The Supreme Court declined to review the verdict on June 29, but Trump’s lawyers filed a rehearing petition and argued the funds should remain in escrow until that request is resolved.
Kaplan granted Carroll’s request without waiting for the Supreme Court rehearing decision. Reuters reported Trump quickly appealed the disbursement order and argued Carroll could donate the money, making it difficult to recover if he later prevailed.
Carroll also won a separate $83.3 million defamation verdict against Trump in 2024, which remains part of ongoing litigation.
