Former President Donald Trump, speaking to a gathering of Black conservatives in Columbia, South Carolina, suggested his criminal indictments resonate with Black voters, seeing a parallel in their experiences with discrimination. Trump, who faces 91 criminal charges across multiple cases, articulated, “I got indicted for nothing, for something that is nothing… And a lot of people said that that’s why the Black people like me because they have been hurt so badly and discriminated against, and they actually viewed me as I’m being discriminated against.”

During the event hosted by the Black Conservative Federation, Trump emphasized the shared understanding of being targeted by corrupt systems, positing this as a reason for increased support from Black Americans. He remarked on the notable embrace of his mug shot by Black Americans, observing it being used on merchandise like shirts.

Trump also took the opportunity to attack Joe Biden, labeling him a “vicious racist” and critiquing Biden’s involvement with the 1994 crime bill and his past comments on working with segregationist senators. He made a controversial comment about only being able to see Black attendees due to the lighting at the gala, which elicited laughter from the crowd.

The campaign manager for Nikki Haley, Trump’s major rival in the GOP presidential primary, criticized Trump’s remarks, suggesting they contribute to the chaos and drama unwanted by American voters. Despite Trump’s commanding lead in the primary race, Haley has pledged to continue her campaign.

The White House has been contacted for a response to Trump’s accusations against Biden, who has previously labeled Trump the first racist to win the presidency.
