During a North Carolina rally, former President Donald Trump mocked Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s recent endorsement, calling it a “painful day” for the senator. Trump and McConnell have clashed since the 2020 election, with McConnell privately calling Trump “stupid” and publicly blaming him for the January 6 Capitol riot. Despite this, McConnell endorsed Trump as the Republican nominee, which Trump ridiculed, saying McConnell “must’ve been a painful day in his life.”

McConnell, who will step down as Senate leader this month and retire in 2027, has led the Senate GOP since 2007. Senators John Cornyn and John Thune are frontrunners to replace him, though analysts describe them as “conventional” options. Political strategist Jason Cabel Roe praised McConnell’s legislative skills, noting his replacement must be able to work with either a second Trump administration or a potential Harris presidency.
