President Donald Trump announced Monday that he spoke separately with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin to initiate ceasefire negotiations between the two nations. Posting on Truth Social, Trump described his two-hour call with Putin as productive, stating both sides have agreed to begin peace talks “immediately.”
Trump praised the “tone and spirit” of the discussions and indicated that the Vatican could host the negotiations. His remarks followed Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s weekend meeting with Zelenskyy and Pope Leo XIV in Rome.
The peace overture comes amid renewed bombings in Ukraine and shortly after a prisoner swap deal was reached between Ukraine, Russia, and Turkey involving 1,000 detainees from each side.
Trump also highlighted post-war economic potential for both countries, stating, “Russia can create massive amounts of jobs and wealth… Ukraine can be a great beneficiary on trade.”
