Donald Trump awarded Elon Musk a symbolic gold key to the White House on Friday, recognizing his 130-day tenure leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Trump praised Musk’s “incredible service” and called him an “incredible patriot” during an Oval Office press event.
Musk’s brief advisory role involved spearheading sweeping cost-cutting efforts across the federal government, including workforce reductions and agency closures. The measures triggered nationwide protests over job losses and reduced public services, though the administration defended the moves as necessary reforms.
“This is not the end of DOGE, but really the beginning,” Musk said. He predicted the initiative would eventually eliminate $1 trillion in waste and fraud. Vice President J.D. Vance echoed the optimism, stating that DOGE will “continue to grow stronger” after Musk’s departure.
The gold key follows a similar gesture made to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The White House has not released an official count of such symbolic gifts.
