The Trump administration has frozen over $6 billion in federal grants for after-school, summer learning, and other education programs, sparking panic among schools and providers serving low-income families. The funding review, ordered by the Education Department, affects key programs like 21st Century Community Learning Centers and support for English learners and adult literacy.
Programs expecting funds on July 1 are now in limbo. “If these funds are blocked, the fallout will be swift and devastating,” said Boys and Girls Clubs CEO Jim Clark, warning up to 926 clubs could close, affecting 220,000 children.
The freeze affects districts nationwide, including those in Alabama, Oregon, and Washington. Many say they’ll have to shutter programs, lay off staff, or end summer services early. Critics accuse the administration of undermining congressional authority and punishing students for political gain.
Trump’s 2026 budget proposal calls for eliminating these programs entirely. Democratic Sen. Patty Murray called on the administration to release the money immediately: “Every day this funding is held up puts kids at risk.”
