Construction is underway on a new 90,000-square-foot ballroom at the White House, replacing the East Wing demolished this week. Funded through $350 million in private donations from major corporations and individuals, the project is expected to cost $300 million. President Donald Trump has not confirmed its name but is reportedly considering “The President Donald J. Trump Ballroom,” according to ABC News.
White House spokesperson Davis Ingle told Newsweek that only the president will announce the ballroom’s official title. Critics, including the National Trust for Historic Preservation, have urged a halt to the demolition, warning the addition could overwhelm the White House’s historic 55,000-square-foot design.
Trump defended the project as a necessary modernization for hosting large state events, saying it would eliminate the need for temporary outdoor tents. The ballroom’s design includes crystal chandeliers, Corinthian columns, and seating for nearly 1,000 guests.
Ethics experts have questioned donor influence, as contributors include Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Google, and major financial executives. The project is slated for completion before Trump’s term ends in 2029.
