President Donald Trump has issued an executive order directing voting systems to stop using ballots that include barcodes or QR codes, citing “election integrity.” While some states like Georgia, South Carolina, and Delaware use such systems statewide, concerns have been raised about voter trust and transparency.

Critics argue the order is partly driven by conspiracy theories related to the 2020 election. However, even some election officials and experts have questioned the use of coded ballots. Colorado banned QR-coded ballots in 2019 to reduce confusion, and Georgia lawmakers have passed legislation to eliminate them—without allocating funds.

Legal challenges are mounting, with some arguing Trump lacks authority over the independent Election Assistance Commission. The order offers no federal funding to help counties upgrade systems, leaving many, like Los Angeles and Benton County, Arkansas, in limbo.

Despite extensive testing showing accurate results, debate over QR codes continues to divide voters, officials, and lawmakers.
