Lee Zeldin, head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), said Tuesday the agency will issue draft plans to overturn the 2009 “endangerment finding” — a foundational ruling that allows the U.S. to regulate greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act.

Speaking on the conservative podcast Ruthless, Zeldin called the move “a dagger into the heart of the climate change religion,” echoing President Donald Trump‘s longstanding effort to roll back environmental regulations.

The endangerment finding was issued in response to the 2007 Supreme Court case Massachusetts v. EPA, enabling regulation of emissions from vehicles and power plants.

Environmental groups warned of the decision’s impact, with the Environmental Defense Fund calling it “dangerous,” and the Center for Biological Diversity accusing Trump of prioritizing Big Oil over public health.

Zeldin defended the draft proposal as a move toward economic sanity, claiming environmental rules are often used to “bankrupt the country.” He said a public comment period will precede finalization and welcomed expected litigation.
