The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), under President Trump, is proposing to eliminate greenhouse gas limits for coal and gas-fired power plants, arguing that carbon dioxide emissions “do not contribute significantly to dangerous pollution” or climate change.
The proposed regulation marks a sharp reversal from previous climate policies. According to documents obtained by Reuters, the EPA claims that reducing power plant emissions would not meaningfully improve public health or environmental outcomes due to their declining share of global emissions.
Environmental advocates warn the move undermines climate science and will slow progress toward reducing emissions. The power sector is currently the second-largest source of greenhouse gases in the United States.
The draft rule comes as the Trump administration advances broader efforts to dismantle climate regulations and roll back provisions from President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, including funding for renewable energy and electric vehicles.
The EPA’s proposal is undergoing interagency review and could be published in coming weeks, potentially weakening America’s climate commitments for years to come.
