President Donald Trump doubled down Friday on claims that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) hiring practices contributed to a fatal midair collision near Reagan National Airport.
“This is just one reason why our Country WAS going to hell!!!” Trump posted, citing allegations that the FAA promoted hiring under the Biden administration of individuals with psychiatric disabilities.
During a Thursday briefing, Trump said aviation safety should prioritize “the brightest, the smartest, the sharpest” individuals and criticized Biden-era hiring policies. Investigations into the crash, which killed 67 people, are still ongoing.
Democratic lawmakers condemned Trump’s remarks. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) called them baseless and disrespectful, while Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Ill.) noted Trump had just cut an aviation security committee.
Trump recently signed an executive order ending DEI hiring at federal agencies and appointed Chris Rocheleau as acting FAA administrator.
