President Donald Trump said Monday he will not seek the vice presidency as a backdoor path to a third term, calling the idea “too cute” and insisting that “people wouldn’t like that.” Speaking aboard Air Force One en route to Tokyo, Trump also suggested he might run again for the White House, despite the 22nd Amendment barring anyone from being elected president more than twice.

“I would love to do it. I have my best numbers ever,” Trump said, citing polls that he claims show record approval. He argued that Democrats lack a clear nominee and that his popularity remains strong, though most surveys show his national approval rating below 40 percent.

Legal experts, including Wayne Unger of Quinnipiac University, say the Constitution is clear that a third Trump term would be unconstitutional. Efforts by GOP allies, such as Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.), to amend the 22nd Amendment to allow three non-consecutive terms are considered politically unrealistic.

Trump’s comments come after Steve Bannon claimed Trump’s “third term is inevitable.” However, a YouGov/Economist poll earlier this year found 70% of voters oppose Trump running again.
