WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will direct the Department of Defense and other federal agencies to begin identifying and releasing government files related to unidentified flying objects and extraterrestrial life.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump said he would instruct the “Secretary of War” and relevant departments to start the process of declassifying records tied to “alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs).” He described the issue as “extremely interesting and important,” citing strong public interest.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt later called the move “out of this world news” on social media.
Trump’s announcement followed remarks criticizing former President Barack Obama, whom he accused of revealing classified information about alien life. Obama previously stated that while the universe is vast and statistically likely to contain life, he had not seen evidence of extraterrestrials.
Interest in UFOs and UAP has grown in recent years. In 2022 and 2023, congressional committees held hearings examining military reports and whistleblower claims, including testimony from former intelligence official David Grusch alleging secret programs to reverse engineer nonhuman technology — claims the Pentagon has denied.
There remains no confirmed evidence of extraterrestrial life.
