At a campaign event in Doral, Florida, aimed at Latino voters, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump called Democratic candidate Kamala Harris “lazy,” a term often seen as racially charged when used against Black individuals. Trump criticized Harris for taking a day without public events, asking, “Who the hell takes off when you have 14 days left?” Harris was in Washington, D.C., for private meetings and scheduled media interviews on Tuesday.

Harris’ spokesperson Ian Sams responded by highlighting that Trump had canceled a town hall scheduled for the same day, sarcastically commenting on Trump’s recent trend of skipping events.

Throughout his career, Trump has used similar language, questioning the competence of political opponents and employing racial undertones. His comments about Harris echo attacks made against President Biden in 2020 and Hillary Clinton in 2016. Trump has also faced allegations of racial discrimination in the past, including a lawsuit from the 1970s and a recent defamation claim from the “Exonerated Five,” whom Trump criticized in a recent debate with Harris.

Trump’s use of the term “lazy” has drawn attention for evoking stereotypes historically used to demean Black Americans, perpetuating harmful racial tropes.
