President Donald Trump said Thursday he does not plan to seek congressional approval for his military campaign targeting suspected drug smugglers in the Caribbean, declaring, “We’re just gonna kill people.” Speaking during a press event, Trump dismissed the idea of a formal declaration of war, despite the Constitution granting that power exclusively to Congress.
Critics from across the political spectrum called the statement a dangerous overreach of executive authority. Former Republican congressman Justin Amash said, “If it’s war, he must go to Congress. If it’s crime, he must go to court.” Democratic Senator Adam Schiff added that Americans “don’t want another war” and urged Trump to follow the law.
The campaign has already expanded to maritime strikes in the eastern Pacific, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirming attacks on boats carrying suspected traffickers. The Pentagon has provided limited details to Congress, prompting lawmakers to seek new limits on Trump’s war powers.
A Senate resolution to restrict such strikes failed in a 51–48 vote, with only two Republicans—Lisa Murkowski and Rand Paul—joining Democrats.
