Former President Donald Trump defended his reported post-presidency conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, though he declined to confirm if they took place. In an interview at a Chicago economic forum, Trump responded to questions about Bob Woodward’s book, War, which claims Trump has spoken with Putin at least seven times since leaving office. Trump stated, “If I’m friendly with people…that’s a good thing,” emphasizing the importance of diplomatic relations with a nuclear-armed nation.
Woodward’s book also revealed that Trump sent COVID-19 testing equipment to Russia during the early stages of the pandemic, a claim partially confirmed by the Kremlin. Trump’s team denied the specifics of the report, which has raised concerns about the nature of his relationship with Putin, a long-time U.S. adversary. Trump continues to highlight his close ties with Putin, arguing that it would benefit the U.S. if he is re-elected.
