WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump declined to call for Rep. Max Miller’s resignation Monday, praising the Ohio Republican while describing the domestic abuse dispute involving Miller’s ex-wife as “a very sad thing.”
Miller’s former wife, Emily Moreno, has accused him of physical abuse and threatening behavior during their marriage. Her father, Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno, said Miller represents a danger to his daughter and granddaughter and “should not serve” in Congress. Miller denies the allegations and has vowed to remain in the race.
Trump characterized the conflict as a difficult family matter and said Miller had been “a good person” in his dealings with him. The president stopped short of withdrawing his support or demanding that Miller leave office.
The response comes as Republicans worry the allegations could endanger a previously reliable GOP district. Party leaders reportedly contacted White House officials while considering whether Miller could still be replaced before Ohio’s ballot deadline.
Miller, a former Trump White House aide, has accused his ex-wife and her family of making false claims during a bitter custody dispute. Moreno, however, said his family endured two years of “pure hell” and that Miller displayed a pattern of dangerous behavior.
Democrats increasingly view the controversy as an opportunity to capture the seat as control of the narrowly divided House remains at stake.
