Former President Donald Trump defended his brief phone interview with Fox News after critics claimed he rambled during the call, which followed Vice President Kamala Harris’s speech at the Democratic National Convention.

Trump clarified on Truth Social that Fox News anchor Bret Baier had asked him to critique Harris’s speech, stating, “Bret Baier of FoxNews called me, I didn’t call him.” Trump’s call, which lasted about 10 minutes, was marked by apparent keypad noises and interruptions from Baier and co-anchor Martha MacCallum as Trump criticized Harris’s remarks.

New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd described the call as a “scream-of-consciousness” that was cut off abruptly for a comedy show. In response, Trump emphasized that he doesn’t need to initiate calls to appear on TV, claiming, “They call me! It’s called Ratings, I guess, and I’m the ‘Ratings Machine!’”

Trump also reiterated his critique of Harris’s speech, calling it “nonspecific and weak” and noting that important issues like fracking, crime, and inflation were not mentioned. Fox News has not yet commented on Trump’s claims.
