President Trump condemned Sunday’s fatal shooting at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan, calling it “an attack against Christianity.”

Authorities said 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford of Burton, Michigan, drove into the church before opening fire with what was described as an assault rifle. Five people, including the suspect, were killed and nine others injured. The FBI is investigating the case as a targeted attack and has deployed 100 agents to assist.

A fire broke out during the assault but was contained. Officials warned additional victims may be discovered once the site is fully cleared. Sheriff Chris Swanson described the event as “heartbreaking and tragic,” adding that local, state, and federal agencies are working together to provide answers and support.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a statement thanking supporters worldwide and urging peace and healing. A Henry Ford Health spokesperson said nine injured individuals are receiving treatment, with counselors available for families and staff.

The Gun Violence Archive reports this marks the 324th mass shooting in the United States this year. The attack came one day after LDS Church President Russell M. Nelson died at age 101.
