Donald Trump lashed out at Elon Musk on Thursday, expressing disappointment over Musk’s public criticism of the Republican-backed “Big Beautiful Bill Act,” a sweeping tax cut and spending package central to Trump’s second-term agenda.
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump suggested Musk’s opposition stemmed from the bill’s proposed elimination of electric vehicle tax credits, which would impact Tesla. “I’ve helped Elon a lot,” Trump said. “I’m very disappointed in Elon.”
Musk, who recently left his role overseeing the federal Department of Government Efficiency, has argued the bill fuels national debt. He posted on X during Trump’s remarks: “Slim Beautiful Bill for the win,” and called for the removal of “a mountain of disgusting pork.”
Though Musk had led federal cost-cutting efforts under Trump, he left having reduced only a fraction of the federal budget. His departure followed backlash over mass layoffs and aid cuts.
Tesla stock dropped 6% Thursday following Trump’s remarks, deepening losses from earlier in the day.
