President-elect Donald Trump is weighing a 90-day extension to delay a TikTok ban set for Sunday, giving ByteDance, the app’s Chinese parent company, more time to divest. Speaking to NBC News on Saturday, Trump said a final decision would likely be made after his inauguration on Monday.
“The 90-day extension is something that will most likely be done because it’s appropriate. We have to look at it carefully,” Trump stated in a phone interview.
The extension option arises after the Supreme Court upheld a law requiring ByteDance to divest or face a ban, with provisions for a single extension if significant progress toward divestiture is demonstrated.
TikTok announced plans to temporarily “go dark” until clarity is provided, but White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre dismissed the move as a “stunt,” stating that enforcement decisions rest with Trump’s incoming administration.
