With a government shutdown deadline approaching Oct. 1, President Trump will meet Monday with top congressional leaders from both parties, the White House confirmed.

The talks will bring together House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY). Republicans are backing a short-term continuing resolution (CR) that would extend government funding until Nov. 21. Democrats, however, are demanding healthcare concessions tied to Medicaid reforms included in Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” signed in July.

Jeffries and Schumer said in a joint statement that Democrats remain ready to negotiate “anywhere, at any time,” stressing the urgency of avoiding a shutdown. Trump canceled a previous meeting last week, calling Democratic demands “unserious and ridiculous.”

Both parties have begun casting blame for a potential lapse in funding. Republicans accuse Democrats of trying to protect healthcare benefits for undocumented immigrants, while Democrats argue GOP reforms created a “healthcare crisis.”

If no deal is reached by Sept. 30, federal workers will go unpaid and government operations will close until a funding bill passes. The seven-week CR under discussion would allow time for lawmakers to negotiate a larger appropriations package for fiscal 2026.
