In a recent appearance on The Dan Bongino Show, former President Donald Trump claimed that the treatment of those imprisoned for the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riots is among the worst in history, second only to Japanese Americans interned during World War II. Trump questioned why many rioters remain incarcerated despite a June Supreme Court ruling that found an obstruction law used in some cases was misapplied.

“Nobody’s ever been treated like this,” Trump said. He also compared the situation to the U.S. government’s internment of Japanese Americans during WWII, saying, “Maybe the Japanese during Second World War… but they were held, too.”

During the riots, pro-Trump supporters attempted to stop the certification of President Biden’s 2020 victory. The Department of Justice has since charged around 1,500 people in connection with the attack, with approximately 900 pleading guilty. Trump has recently downplayed the violence, referring to Jan. 6 as a “day of love” during a Univision town hall and insisting in another interview that he allowed for a peaceful transfer of power.
