Davos, Switzerland — President Donald Trump again claimed Wednesday that people will soon be prosecuted for what he described as a “rigged” 2020 presidential election, reviving allegations that have been repeatedly rejected by courts, election officials, and his own former administration.
Speaking during a wide-ranging address at the World Economic Forum, Trump asserted that “everybody now knows” the 2020 election was rigged and said prosecutions are forthcoming. He offered no evidence, did not identify potential defendants, and did not specify what crimes would be charged. The Department of Justice declined to comment.
Trump lost the 2020 election to former President Joe Biden, a result certified by all 50 states and upheld after dozens of court challenges. Federal judges, state election officials from both parties, and independent audits found no evidence of widespread voter fraud. Former Attorney General William Barr, appointed by Trump, stated in 2022 that the Justice Department found no evidence of fraud that could have changed the outcome.
Since returning to office, Trump has continued efforts to relitigate the election. The Justice Department has filed lawsuits seeking access to voter rolls in Democratic-led states and sued Fulton County, Georgia, for 2020 election materials. Courts have blocked or narrowed several executive actions attempting to expand federal authority over elections.
Trump also claimed the war in Ukraine would not have occurred if he had won reelection, a statement unsupported by historical or intelligence assessments.
