The Trump campaign brought in roughly $35 million after former President Donald Trump was found guilty of 34 felony counts in a New York hush money trial, attributing the surge to grassroots donor support.
“From just minutes after the sham trial verdict was announced, our digital fundraising system was overwhelmed with support,” Trump campaign senior advisers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles said in a joint statement. “Despite temporary delays online because of the amount of traffic, President Trump raised $34.8 million dollars from small dollar donors.”
The campaign noted this fundraising total broke previous records for small-dollar donations in a single day. LaCivita and Wiles highlighted that nearly 30 percent of the post-verdict donors were new to the WinRed platform, which is used by Republican candidates for fundraising.
“President Trump and our campaign are immensely grateful for this outpouring of support from patriots across our country,” they added. “President Trump is fighting to save our nation and November 5th is the day Americans will deliver the real verdict.”
On Thursday, Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records, making him the first former president convicted of a felony. The 12-person jury reached their verdict after approximately 11 hours of deliberation.
Trump, who denies the affair and pleaded not guilty, is expected to appeal. Following the conviction, his campaign and allies swiftly mobilized to convert outrage into a fundraising boost, sharing links on social media and urging supporters to contribute.
The influx of donations temporarily crashed Trump’s WinRed page, an issue attributed to the high volume of traffic. Trump has previously used legal challenges to galvanize financial support, such as leveraging his mug shot from a Georgia indictment to raise campaign funds.
While the Trump campaign trails Biden’s in terms of cash on hand, it managed to out-raise the Biden campaign in April as GOP donors consolidate behind Trump.
