Donald Trump’s campaign announced plans to support “universal access” to in-vitro fertilization (IVF) if he is re-elected, potentially extending coverage to same-sex couples. Campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump supports universal access to both contraception and IVF, adding, “We’re going to be mandating that the insurance company pay.”

This statement followed Trump’s recent comments about having either the government or insurance cover IVF costs for all Americans. When asked if the plan includes same-sex couples, the campaign did not provide a clear response.

Trump’s remarks on IVF have surprised even his own advisors, and specifics on implementing this policy remain unclear. Many Republican lawmakers are reportedly puzzled by the proposal, with some opposing it outright. Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign criticized Trump’s stance, accusing him of supporting policies that restrict IVF access for LGBTQ couples.

Currently, only seven states mandate IVF benefits for same-sex couples, with treatment costs averaging around $20,000 per cycle.
