President Donald Trump escalated his criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, calling him a “dictator” for not holding elections and accusing him of prolonging the war with Russia. Trump’s remarks, made on Truth Social, follow his earlier claim that Ukraine “started” the war, comments that have drawn condemnation from European leaders and U.S. lawmakers.

European officials reacted with disbelief, with a British government aide responding with “Jesus” when asked about Trump’s statement. French government spokesperson Sophie Primas described his remarks as “varied and often incomprehensible.” Meanwhile, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius criticized the U.S. for barring Ukraine from NATO, arguing it weakened Ukraine’s position against Russia.

Trump’s accusations also stirred debate in Washington. Several Republican senators, including Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins, rejected his claim that Ukraine started the war, reaffirming that Russia, under Vladimir Putin’s directive, was responsible. However, Sen. Josh Hawley echoed Trump’s demand for Ukraine to hold elections despite the ongoing war.

As international pressure mounts, Ukrainian officials insist that no peace deal can be made without their involvement.
