President Donald Trump on Friday called for the prosecution of several former Biden-era Justice Department officials, including former Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBI Director Christopher Wray, special counsel Jack Smith, and Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco. Posting on Truth Social, Trump accused the group of authorizing an FBI probe that reviewed phone records of nine Republican lawmakers.
“These Radical Left Lunatics should be prosecuted for their illegal and highly unethical behavior!” Trump wrote, without specifying what crimes he believes occurred. The claims center on “Arctic Frost,” a 2023 investigation into efforts by Trump and his allies to overturn the 2020 election. Documents released by Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley indicate the probe had been approved by Garland, Monaco, and Wray in 2022.
The FBI has said the collected data did not include call content—only numbers, timestamps, and call lengths. Grassley denounced the operation as “arguably worse than Watergate,” while Smith’s attorneys said the investigation followed DOJ protocol.
Trump, previously indicted by Smith over election-related conduct, is shielded from prosecution as a sitting president. His legal team recently sought $230 million from the DOJ for alleged damages from past investigations.
