WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump escalated his ongoing feud with California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday, accusing the Democratic governor of racism following comments Newsom made during a recent book tour appearance.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump criticized Newsom over remarks the governor made while promoting his memoir during a conversation with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens. Newsom told the audience he was “a 960 SAT guy” and joked that he cannot read prepared speeches, referencing his long-standing struggle with dyslexia. The comment quickly drew criticism from some conservatives who argued the remarks sounded dismissive toward Black voters.
Trump responded by calling the interview “the most self-destructive interview I’ve ever seen” and claiming the remarks had effectively damaged Newsom’s prospects as a potential Democratic presidential candidate in 2028. “Black People are angry because he is obviously a racist,” Trump wrote.
Newsom pushed back against Trump’s characterization, saying the comments were clearly about his dyslexia rather than voters. In response to Trump’s remarks, Newsom fired back on social media, calling the president a “brain-dead moron” and accusing him of misunderstanding the context of the comments.
The exchange marks the latest clash between the two political rivals as speculation continues over whether Newsom may seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028. Newsom has not formally announced any campaign and previously said his family will help determine whether he runs.
