Zohran Mamdani appears poised to become New York City’s next mayor after defeating Andrew Cuomo in the first round of the Democratic primary. Mamdani’s campaign focused on left-wing policies, including a pledge to block cooperation with ICE and prevent deportations.
That pledge drew a sharp rebuke from President Trump’s Border Czar, Tom Homan, who told Fox Business that “Federal law trumps him… every day, every hour of every minute.” Homan warned that under a second Trump term, immigration enforcement in sanctuary cities like New York would intensify. “We’re going to double down and triple down on sanctuary cities,” he said.
Mamdani’s broader platform includes rent freezes, free childcare, no-cost transit, and a complete halt to city cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
Donald Trump reacted on Truth Social, calling Mamdani “a 100% Communist Lunatic” and accusing Democrats of going too far left. “This is getting a little ridiculous,” Trump added, while criticizing Mamdani’s appearance and intelligence.
Mamdani will face Eric Adams and Republican Curtis Sliwa in November.
