Donald Trump signed a resolution Thursday blocking California’s rule banning new gas-powered car sales by 2035, triggering an immediate lawsuit from the state and 10 other Democratic-led states.

The rule, part of California’s aggressive climate agenda, also included tailpipe and diesel truck emissions limits. At a White House signing ceremony, Trump dismissed the regulations as “crazy” and claimed repealing them would restore “freedom” to choose combustion engines.

“I like Tesla,” Trump added, despite a recent feud with Elon Musk.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta called the move “unlawful” and “wildly partisan.” Gov. Gavin Newsom said Trump’s action would “destroy clean air and America’s global competitiveness,” pledging to challenge it in court.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office and Senate parliamentarian have both said the Congressional Review Act cannot legally be used to revoke California’s waivers for stricter environmental rules.

The decision continues Trump’s rollback of environmental protections as he campaigns on reviving fossil fuel development and American auto manufacturing.
