WASHINGTON, D.C. — A large blue banner bearing President Donald Trump’s portrait, the Department of Justice seal, and the slogan “Make America Safe Again” was mounted Thursday on the exterior of the Justice Department’s headquarters, drawing immediate national attention and sharp political reaction.

The banner was displayed across the Robert F. Kennedy Building, also known as Main Justice. Similar banners featuring Trump were placed last year at the Departments of Agriculture and Labor. The latest installation quickly went viral on social media, fueling debate over the symbolism of placing a president’s image so prominently on a department historically viewed as independent from White House political messaging.

NBC News reporter Ken Dilanian called the display “a stunning confirmation of the grim reality” that Trump has consolidated influence over the department. California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office compared the imagery to displays seen in North Korea. The Justice Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The display comes as the DOJ oversees high-profile legal matters involving former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, intensifying scrutiny over the department’s leadership and institutional independence.

Supporters argue the banner reflects a focus on law enforcement and public safety, while critics say it raises concerns about the separation between presidential politics and federal law enforcement.
