President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to its lowest level of his second term, according to a new YouGov/Economist poll released Tuesday.

The survey, conducted September 12–15, found 39 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the presidency, down from 41 percent in recent weeks. Disapproval rose to 57 percent, marking his highest second-term negative rating. The poll gave Trump a net approval of minus 18, his second-lowest score across both terms. The lowest was minus 21 in November 2017, though pollsters described that earlier dip as temporary.

Trump remains popular within his base: 86 percent of his 2024 voters and 88 percent of Republicans approve of his performance. By contrast, nearly two-thirds of independents disapprove, and moderates are similarly critical, with 65 percent disapproving.

Pollsters cautioned it is too early to tell whether the decline reflects a lasting trend or a short-term shift. The survey included 1,567 respondents and had a margin of error of 3.6 percentage points.
