Donald Trump announced Wednesday he is authorizing 25% tariffs on India beginning August 1, citing the country’s ongoing imports of Russian energy and defense equipment, as well as longstanding trade grievances.
“India is our friend,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, “but their Tariffs are far too high… and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country.”
Trump criticized India for maintaining strong energy and military ties with Russia despite the global push to isolate Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine. He emphasized that India, alongside China, remains Russia’s largest energy buyer.
The tariffs are part of a broader Trump strategy linking trade policy to foreign affairs and U.S. geopolitical interests. He previously hinted at the move Tuesday, acknowledging Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “good friend” but asserting that India imposes “more tariffs than almost any other country.”
The new tariff plan may affect trade negotiations with India and broader U.S. efforts in Asia.
