Donald Trump announced Sunday that any country “aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS” would face a 10% additional tariff, with “no exceptions.” The move comes just hours after the BRICS bloc—comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Iran—criticized unilateral tariff measures as “inconsistent” with World Trade Organization rules.
The statement followed the group’s leaders’ summit in Brazil, its first since 2009. Though neither Xi Jinping nor Vladimir Putin attended in person, the bloc condemned recent U.S. military strikes on Iran and reaffirmed efforts to reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also warned that countries not finalizing trade deals with the U.S. by August 1 would face April-level tariffs. The message sets a hard deadline for global partners to renegotiate.
