WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump announced Friday that he will impose a new 10% global tariff on imports for five months, following a Supreme Court ruling limiting his authority to enact certain emergency-based tariffs.

Speaking at a press conference, Trump said he would sign an order under Section 122 to implement the additional tariff “over and above our normal tariffs already being charged.” He also said his administration is initiating new Section 301 and other investigations aimed at addressing what he described as unfair trade practices.

The announcement comes after the Supreme Court ruled that Trump exceeded his authority in using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose sweeping “reciprocal” tariffs. The new 10% tariff appears designed to rely on alternative statutory authority.

Trump emphasized that national security tariffs imposed under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act and Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act will remain in effect. Those provisions have previously been used to justify tariffs on steel, aluminum and other goods tied to national security or trade enforcement concerns.

The temporary global tariff could affect a broad range of imported products, though further details on implementation and potential exemptions were not immediately released.
