President Donald Trump on Thursday once again floated the idea of running for a third term, despite the constitutional prohibition, drawing loud applause from attendees at a Black History Month event at the White House.
“Should I run again? You tell me?” Trump asked the crowd in the East Room, prompting chants of “four more years.” Laughing, he acknowledged that the moment would likely make headlines, adding, “There’s your controversy right there.”
Since winning a second term in November, Trump has repeatedly raised the possibility of seeking a third, including in meetings with House Republicans. While historically most presidents adhered to George Washington’s two-term precedent, Franklin D. Roosevelt won four terms before the passage of the 22nd Amendment, which limits presidents to two elections.
Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) has introduced a constitutional amendment to allow Trump—but not other former two-term presidents—to run again. The proposal, however, faces almost no chance of passing Congress. Trump remains only the second president, after Grover Cleveland, to serve nonconsecutive terms.
