The Trump administration has informed Congress of its intent to designate Haitian gangs Viv Ansanm and Gran Grif as foreign terrorist organizations, according to sources familiar with the notification. The designation would trigger sanctions and penalties for anyone providing support to the groups.

This move follows similar actions against Latin American groups, including MS-13 and Tren de Aragua, which President Trump cited Tuesday as part of his immigration crackdown.

The designation comes as part of broader efforts to expand the use of the Alien Enemies Act to detain and deport migrants without court hearings. The administration recently terminated protections for thousands of Haitians under a Biden-era humanitarian program.

Viv Ansanm, a coalition of over a dozen gangs, is behind major violence in Haiti, including attacks that shut down airports and freed inmates from prisons. Gran Grif, another gang, has been linked to mass killings and human rights abuses.

The United Nations reports over 5,600 people were killed by gang violence in Haiti last year, and more than 1 million were displaced.
