The Trump administration has reached a preliminary settlement with the family of Ashli Babbitt, who was fatally shot during the U.S. Capitol riot. Attorneys for both sides told a Washington federal judge Friday that they’ve agreed in principle, though the final terms are still pending and undisclosed.
Babbitt’s estate filed a $30 million lawsuit last year, alleging the Capitol Police officer who shot her acted negligently and failed to issue any warnings. The officer, who was not in uniform, fired when Babbitt attempted to climb through a shattered window into the Speaker’s Lobby. Officials said the officer acted in self-defense and was cleared by both the Capitol Police and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Babbitt, a 35-year-old unarmed Air Force veteran, was part of the mob breaching the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Her family argues she posed no threat and claims the department should have known the officer might act dangerously. Trump later pardoned or commuted charges for over 1,500 individuals tied to the riot.
