President Trump is offering buyouts to most federal employees, providing eight months of pay and benefits to those who resign by Feb. 6. The administration expects 5% to 10% of the workforce to accept the offer, aiming to reduce remote and hybrid positions and increase in-person government staffing.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that taxpayers deserve federal employees who “actually show up to work.” Employees will receive a governmentwide email with a draft resignation letter, which they can accept by replying “resign.” The email warns that job security cannot be guaranteed for those who stay.
The buyouts exclude military personnel, postal workers, and those in national security or immigration enforcement. The White House claims the plan could save $100 billion annually. However, the American Federation of Government Employees condemned the move, calling it an attempt to create a toxic work environment.
