The Trump administration has reclassified over 6,000 living immigrants as deceased, canceling their Social Security numbers in an apparent effort to pressure them into leaving the United States, according to sources familiar with the action.

By moving the immigrants’ names and Social Security numbers into the federal database used to track the dead, the administration is cutting off access to banking, employment, and benefits. Officials described it as a tactic to prompt “self-deportation.” Many of the targeted immigrants had been granted temporary legal status under President Joe Biden’s use of humanitarian parole, including those who entered via the CBP One app.

On Monday, the Department of Homeland Security revoked that legal status. Meanwhile, a federal judge has temporarily blocked efforts to deport hundreds of thousands of Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans with similar status.

The Social Security Administration did not respond to requests for comment. Critics, including advocacy group Democracy Forward, warned the move is unlawful and signals a broader crackdown on immigrant protections.
